Terracotta facades - Natural elegance, contemporary design

Send enquiry

Terracotta, a material with a history spanning thousands of years, is experiencing its renaissance in contemporary architecture.. Obtained from high-quality natural clay that is shaped, dried, and fired at extremely high temperatures (often above 1,000°C), terracotta represents a superb blend of nature and engineering..

At Avantall we offer advanced ventilated terracotta facade systems that not only give buildings a distinctive, earthy visual identity but also significantly improve their technical performance. These systems perfectly bridge the gap between traditional warmth and the strict requirements of modern construction, making them an ideal choice for residential, commercial, and public buildings..

Why choose Terracotta facades for your project?

1. Superior energy efficiency and thermal insulation

Thanks to the natural porosity of clay and the principle of the ventilated facade (rainscreen), terracotta systems offer outstanding insulation. The air gap between the panels and the insulation creates a “chimney” effect that efficiently dissipates heat in the summer, preventing overheating, while retaining heat inside the building in the winter, significantly reducing energy costs.

2. Extreme durability and safety

Fired at high temperatures, terracotta is an exceptionally strong material resistant to impacts, scratches, UV radiation, and extreme weather conditions (including freeze-thaw cycles). Furthermore, terracotta is a completely non-combustible material (Class A1), making it an extremely safe choice for high-rise buildings and facilities with high safety requirements.

3. Almost maintenance-free
Unlike many other facade materials, terracotta does not require sealing, grouting, or regular painting. Its colour does not fade under the sun, and its natural resistance to smog and pollution means that occasional pressure washing (every 10 years or so) is usually enough to keep the facade looking like new. The lifespan of a terracotta facade often exceeds 100 years.

4. 100% Sustainability and ecology
Terracotta is the ultimate “green” material. It consists solely of natural clay and water, with no added chemicals or artificial fibres. At the end of its exceptionally long lifespan, the material can be fully recycled or ground down and reused, making it a perfect choice for projects focused on sustainability and obtaining green certifications (such as LEED or BREEAM).

5. Protection against moisture and condensation

The ventilated facade system with open joints effectively prevents rainwater from entering the building structure, while simultaneously allowing the building to “breathe”. The pressure differences and constant airflow in the cavity prevent moisture accumulation and the formation of dangerous condensation or mould within the walls.

Unlimited freedom of architectural expression

Terracotta offers incredible design versatility, allowing architects to create unique and striking facades.

Natural colours (unglazed)

Terracotta's colour isn't just superficial – it's a result of the natural composition of clay and the firing process. We offer a wide spectrum of natural shades that range from classic “cotto” red and warm ochre tones, to elegant sandy, taupe, and even dark grey and black hues. As the colour is integrated throughout the entire cross-section of the panel (full-body), any damage or cuts remain visually imperceptible.

Glazed surfaces

For projects requiring specific visual effects, we offer glazed terracotta panels. The glaze allows for the achievement of virtually any colour, with the option to choose between a high gloss, matte finish, or even iridescent and metallic effects.

Textures and profiles

In addition to standard flat panels, terracotta surfaces can be textured – from slightly wavy and grooved to roughly brushed textures. We also offer special 3D profiles and “baguette” elements (tubular profiles) which are ideal for creating brise-soleil and dynamic plays of light and shadow on the facade.

Systems tailored to your vision

In collaboration with our top European partners, we offer complete solutions for ventilated facades:

  • Standard facade panels: Available in various formats (usually 24 mm to 30 mm thick), ideal for quick and precise installation over large areas.
  • Terracotta Baguettes (Lampshades): Tubular elements of various cross-sections (square, round, elliptical) used as sun protection over windows or as decorative elements that give depth to the facade.
  • Special Forms: The ability to produce custom panels, including curved elements and complex geometric shapes for the most demanding architectural projects.

All our systems include an associated aluminium substructure that ensures safe, dry and quick assembly, without visible fasteners.
